A HIGH VALUATION
Proverbs 7:1-4 NKJV
1 My son, keep my words,
And treasure my commands within you.
2 Keep my commands and live,
And my law as the apple of your eye.
3 Bind them on your fingers;
Write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
And call understanding your nearest kin,
These are the words that reveal how we are to look at God’s Word. Although it sounds as if it’s a father talking to a son, we can easily apply this to God’s words to us, His children.
Keep God’s words and treasure His commands within. For those of us that collect things, we can understand keep and treasure. We know how to protect things that we value. We have special places for the things that we treasure. We are not casual with things that have a high valuation. We are diligent about our treasures. And the spiritual truth here is that God’s Word and His ways are more valuable than our earthly treasures that pass away.
Keep God’s Word and live. Keep God’s Word as the apple of your eye. We are learning that God’s ways produce life. Those of us who have seen a few seasons have come to realize that the further we get from God, the worse things become. We have seen this in our own country, and the same principle applies to our lives. Keeping God’s Word as the apple of our eye can mean a couple of things. Keep a focus on His Word. And take delight in His Word. Both are good.
Bind them, God’s words, on your fingers and write them on the tablet of your heart. This implies not forgetting or losing sight of what God has said. The Psalmist said that he hid God’s Word in his heart so that he might not sin against God. We can take these instructions and write verses down that we are learning. We can speak verses aloud during our devotional times and during our alone times. The purpose would be to get His valuable word planted in our heart so we don’t forget. We must remember the principle of consistency. When God fed Israel in the wilderness they had to go harvest it every day except for the Sabbath. Jesus prayed give us this day our daily bread. We have access to His words. We are the ones who choose how consistent we will be.
Call wisdom your sister and understanding your nearest kin. This goes hand in hand with our devotional from yesterday. Instead of speaking that we just don’t know and don’t understand, we can say things differently. We can say that God’s wisdom is not foreign to us. God’s wisdom is not rejecting us or avoiding us. God is helping us, and His word and His wisdom are in our lives in a great way. Now that is different, and you may feel awkward when you begin to say things along this line. But if we want different in our lives, we have to be willing to do different. And placing a high valuation on God’s Word is doing differently. But it is also doing well.
PRAYER
Thank You, Lord, for Your Word and Your Holy Spirit. Your wisdom has not evaded me. We are close, and Your words are the treasures of my life!
