THE SECRET PLACE

Psalm 91:1-2, 9, 14 NKJV

1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High

Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;

My God, in Him I will trust.”

9 Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge,

Even the Most High, your dwelling place,

 14 “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;

I will set him on high, because he has known My name.

Happy Easter! Happy Resurrection Day! He is risen!

Our verses today, taken from Psalm 91, help us understand a bit more about what it means to dwell in the secret place of the Most High. There is no indication as to who penned this psalm. Regardless, it’s still inspired.

What is the secret place of the Most High? I cannot provide the definitive answer, but we can see that it’s a safe place in God. And we can observe this is not talking about a physical location. This is a condition of faith and of the heart. The Scriptures provide ways we can arrive at this secret place.

I will say of the Lord. One of the most important pathways to a closer relationship with God is through our words. I will say of the Lord. What is the Psalmist saying? That God is my refuge and fortress. Instead of placing all his confidence in natural protection, the Psalmist declared the Lord to be where he considers his place of safety and strength. I will say of the Lord that He is my God and He is the One I am trusting. There is a lot in that. Saying that God is my God and there are no other gods is a powerful statement. God is the One I am trusting, is another faith statement. Just saying these words helps and strengthens us. Just saying these words is a way of coming closer to God.

In verse nine, the Psalmist speaks of making the Lord the dwelling place. This is another act of faith and a choice that God is the One we look to, and the first place we go with the decisions we make in our lives. This is an active, assertive decision to stay in contact and fellowship with the Lord. This involves a conscious act.

In verse 14, the Psalmist is now writing by inspiration and God is the One speaking in the first person. God is declaring that His delivering power and protection are for the individual who has set his love on God. This love is expressed in words and actions. And the person who knows God’s name. The name meaning all that God represents. This person knows God as Savior, Shepherd, Healer, Provider, and Protector. Who we know God to be in our lives is how we know His name. We don’t limit ourselves to simply knowing God is there but who He is to us personally. The Psalmist knew God as refuge and fortress, the One who is to be loved and trusted.

Believing who God is to us and speaking these words of faith are ways we all can live in the secret place of God’s safety and care.

PRAYER

Lord You are my place of safety and strength. I love You and I trust You. Thank You for delivering me and setting me high above my enemies.
