THE HIDDEN KEY TO HAPPINESS

If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. John 13:17 NKJ

John 13:17 NKJ If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

The apostle John was the only disciple that shared the account of Jesus washing the disciple's feet.

In that day, the washing of feet was reserved for the lowest servant in the hierarchy of house servants. Feet were pretty nasty then, especially in the absence of paved roads and sidewalks.

The fact that Jesus was washing their feet had to be unnerving for the disciples. Peter actually refused. But Jesus had a purpose for His actions. He washed feet as an example for them to follow. He was their Teacher and Lord, yet He washed their feet.

When He would return to heaven, He needed His disciples serving one another, not jockeying for power. He made it clear that they were not above Him, or if He could do this, then they certainly could. Then He kicked in an extra benefit. If you do these things, you will be blessed, or actually the word is happy.

APPLICATION

Years ago, some evangelical denominations had foot washing services. There is nothing wrong with that idea, and it can be a powerful experience.

But even more powerful is the idea and mentality that in God's kingdom, the foot washers are the blessed, happy ones. Not the ones who try to dominate and manipulate, but those who are willing to serve. In the world, people exalt themselves and promote their brand. But in God's kingdom, He promotes and exalts those who serve and bless others.

Jesus, our Savior, and Lord was willing to wash our feet. We are blessed and happy if we adopt that foot washers' posture.

QUESTION

How can you follow Jesus' example and serve those around you?

Try messing with other people's expectations and do something good for them. Be creative, be blessed!
