THE ATTEMPT TO DESCRIBE HOW GOOD GOD IS
PSALM 36:5-9 NKJV
5 Your mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens;
Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
6 Your righteousness is like the great mountains;
Your judgments are a great deep;
O Lord, You preserve man and beast.
7 How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!
Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings.
8 They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house,
And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.
9 For with You is the fountain of life;
In Your light we see light.
David had God-ordained and inspired insight into God's nature. In our verses for today, David attempts to quantify God's wonderful attributes.
God's mercy is in the heavens. God's mercy is as vast and expansive as the heavens themselves. On a starry night, that paints quite a picture.
God's faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Again, such a tall order to describe God's never changing nature. But His faithfulness keeps going and going.
God's righteousness is like the great mountains. David, who spent time outdoors, is expressing how God's creation speaks of His nature. What can appear more solid and eternal as a mountain?
God's judgments are a great deep. The depth of God's ways are like the depths of the ocean.
David then talks about God's interaction with man. His lovingkindness is precious and valuable. So striking that people can put their complete trust under His protective covering.
God abundantly satisfies those who trust in Him. And though I am not quite sure what it means to drink from the river of His pleasures, it sure sounds good to me.
With God is the fountain of life. Even better than a fountain of youth, God's life is spiritual and eternal.
And in God's light, we see light. His children are not in the dark. In His presence, by His word and Spirit, we can see and have insight beyond our age and experience.
Throughout eternity we will be discovering the goodness of God. David gave it a good shot, but it's still not sufficient. God is that good,
PRAYER:
Thank You, Father, for helping me see more of You and how good You are. I know it's beyond the limits of my imagination.
