SOUL STABILITY

Psalm 62:5-8 NKJV

5 My soul, wait silently for God alone,

For my expectation is from Him.

6 He only is my rock and my salvation;

He is my defense;

I shall not be moved.

7 In God is my salvation and my glory;

The rock of my strength,

And my refuge, is in God.

8 Trust in Him at all times, you people;

Pour out your heart before Him;

God is a refuge for us. Selah

Here are some declarations from David regarding his trust in the Lord. And these declarations reveal what David believed. What David believed gave him a sense of stability even though he faced some severe situations.

My soul waits silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. This expectation is an expectation of good; therefore, David's soul, his inner life, was waiting silently. We get the sense that waiting silently would be peacefully. When our soul, our thoughts, and emotions are restless and agitated, this would be the opposite of waiting silently.

It is easy to see that David is expecting good from God by the next few verses. He declares that God is his rock and salvation. That God is his defense, and because of this, he will not be moved. Another word for moved is shaken. So, we are getting an overall picture of someone who is looking to God and expecting help and salvation from God.

And the declarations just keep on coming. David declares that God is his salvation and glory and the rock of his strength. God is not only David's refuge, God is a refuge for His people.

David then encourages all God's people to trust in God at all times. To pour out their hearts before Him. This pouring out the heart is a characteristic that we see in David on a consistent basis. David has a trust in God and that God will be good to him. So David is confident that he can express what is in his heart to God because God is his rock, salvation, defense, and safe place.

APPLICATION

There is such beauty and strength in the Psalms. Just reading these verses does something good for our hearts and strengthens our souls. But we can take this soul-feeding goodness a step further.

What would it do for our inner strength, our soul stability, if we were to declare about God the same things that David spoke? What if we began to declare on a regular basis that we are expecting good from our Father God? What if we began to tell the Lord that He is our rock and salvation and defense? That because God is good, we trust in Him all the time. He is the source of our strength and our place of safety.

If David can boldly declare these things, then so can we. Understand that when we start to declare these things that God is to us, we will have to fight through some barriers. It will sound awkward to our ears, and it will challenge us to live beyond our feelings. These declarations may not seem as if we are telling the truth. But we are not declaring these things based on our feelings, past or present situations. We are declaring this is who our wonderful Father is to us on the solid grounds of biblical truth.

 PRAYER

Heavenly Father, my soul is at peace because I am trusting in You. You are my rock, my help, my strength, and my salvation. I will trust You at all times, and I know I can talk to You, and You will hear me. Thank You that You are more than David's God; You are my God.
