QUALITIES OF GOD

PSALM 36:5-9

PSALM 36:5-9 NKJV
5 Your mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens;
Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
6 Your righteousness is like the great mountains;
Your judgments are a great deep;
O Lord, You preserve man and beast.
7 How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!
Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings.
8 They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house,
And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.
9 For with You is the fountain of life;
In Your light we see light.

OBSERVATION:

This psalm of David starts off describing the characteristics of the wicked.

David reveals his heart regarding evil men. They do not fear God. They are big in their own eyes. They are hateful. Their words are full of wickedness and lies. They are not wise, and they do not do good. They think up evil during their quiet times. Evil things do not bother them at all.

And then David shifts gears to describe the wonderful qualities of God.

David's revelation of God, as penned in this psalm, was divinely inspired. But we also take note of the fact that David believed in the goodness of God. He served a God he deeply trusted as being totally good.

God's mercy was in the heavens, and His faithfulness reached the clouds. God's mercy and faithfulness were not small but expansive.

David compared God's righteousness to great mountains and God's judgment to great depths of the oceans. These were the largest grandest things David could see, so he assigned them to God.

God's lovingkindness is precious, valuable. So much so that men could trust God's goodness and protection.

God abundantly provides for His people. God gives His people drink from the river of His pleasures. I am not quite sure what the river of His pleasures is, but it sounds great. I'm in.

With God is the fountain of life. In God's light, we see light. Walking with God in His word and ways is a winning proposition.

APPLICATION:

It is a good thing to read and receive David's revelation of God's qualities. But you know where I am going with this.

When David's revelation becomes our reality, then we are making progress. As we believe in the mercy, faithfulness, lovingkindness, righteousness, life, and light of God, it does something good in us.

It is much easier to trust God as we believe He is really good. And He will be really good to us!

PRAYER:

Lord, I believe Your goodness far exceeds anything of man. Teach me to walk in Your light.
