MORE COUNTER CULTURAL ADVICE

PROVERBS 27:2

PROVERBS 27:2 NKJ
Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth;
A stranger, and not your own lips.

In our online social media driven world this verse definitely goes against the conventional wisdom of today.  The message of today is promote yourself and your brand.  This line of thinking seems to work for a little while but has a short shelf life.

We usually want to be friends with people who do not brag about themselves.  People who seem to care about other people, not just building their brand.  The self-promoting brand builders may be interesting to follow on Instagram, but the people we want genuine relationships with are cut from a different cloth.

APPLICATION

I must admit the people who are constantly praising themselves are on my shortlist of people I try to avoid.  This especially pertains to believers.  We as believers have received so much grace from God we, of all people, should be the last group to be praising ourselves.

So, this week, give praise to God and acknowledge the ones around you who are making a difference.  When you do talk about yourself, let it be with words of gratitude for what God has done for you.  Gracious people who don't brag about themselves are wonderful to be around.

QUESTION/ACTION

Who do you know that is a gracious person who does not brag about themselves?  Let them know you appreciate that quality in them.
