Better Things
Hebrews 6:9-12 CSB
9 Even though we are speaking this way, dearly loved friends, in your case we are confident of things that are better and that pertain to salvation. 10 For God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you demonstrated for his name by serving the saints—and by continuing to serve them. 11 Now we desire each of you to demonstrate the same diligence for the full assurance of your hope until the end, 12 so that you won’t become lazy but will be imitators of those who inherit the promises through faith and perseverance.
The author had just laid out the stipulations and concurring results for people who consciously walked away from their faith. Chapter six adds an interesting perspective to the concept of once saved, always saved. The concern was for the people who had spiritual maturity and chose to reject Jesus. Not the place you want to be. I know of just one person in my life and all my years in ministry who I am concerned about his eternal salvation. It’s a small number, and I always have to keep in mind I am not God; it’s not my call.
But the author is indicating that he believes in better things for these believers. The better things that are a part of salvation. And I happen to love verse ten. This verse is a reminder that God is totally fair and does not forget or overlook the work and love that is shown toward Him. The best way this love is shown is by serving the believers and continuing that practice. God has better things for those who love and serve Him by loving and serving His children. And just think about it. If you are a parent and someone is good to one of your children, you don’t forget that. You appreciate that. By blessing my children, you bless me. By helping my children, you help me. God, as the model of fatherhood and parenthood, does not forget what we do for His own.
The author encourages the believers to keep their hopes up and that they not become lazy or sluggish, but instead follow the example of those who, through faith and endurance, or perseverance, inherit the promises. This verse is enlightening. This informs us that we inherit the promises of God through faith, believing what God has said. And persevering, not giving up in the face of delay or obstacles. It’s not only faith but endurance that receives the promises of God. To persevere and keep believing requires spiritual effort on our part. We can’t afford to be lazy or sluggish. Remember, this letter was written to believers undergoing persecution for their faith in Christ. Once again, the author of Hebrews is not coddling these beleaguered believers. Rather, he is being straightforward about what it takes to receive the promises of God.
And for those who do receive the promises, better things await.

Lord, thank You for Your promises. I purpose to receive them by believing Your Word and acting on what I have heard. I also purpose to not quit.
