AVOID THE POISON

ACTS 14:1-3

ACTS 14:1-3 NKJ
1 Now it happened in Iconium that they went together to the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke that a great multitude both of the Jews and of the Greeks believed. 2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brethren. 3 Therefore they stayed there a long time, speaking boldly in the Lord, who was bearing witness to the word of His grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

OBSERVATION:

Whenever Paul and Barnabas showed up, either revivals or riots broke out. Often it was both.

In Chapter 14, they have come to the city of Iconium and are preaching in the synagogue of the Jews. If you recall, this was their mode of operation. Jewish synagogues first, then when the heat of persecution was on, they would go to the Gentiles.

In Iconium, many had believed Paul and Barnabas and had received salvation. But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the preaching duo.

Poisoned their minds. How does a mind become poisoned? Poison has to do with lies. Paul and Barnabas had done nothing but bless the people, but unbelieving Jews told lies.

A key to this passage is the word unbelieving. Many had believed the apostles, so it was those who did not believe who were causing the trouble. These unbelievers were spreading lies that impacted people. Lies can poison. But lies can only be poison when they are believed and acted on.

APPLICATION:

Lies still can poison minds today. Lies about people can cause others to reject the very ones who have been sent to help.

Do not be quick to believe everything you hear people say or read on the internet. This is especially true with negative news about people who are preaching the gospel and people who are helping others. Sometimes only the Holy Spirit within us can alert us to a lie, but He knows.

Avoid being quick to believe those who are unbelievers and oppose the gospel. Their motive is not to help, and their words can poison your mind and hurt your faith.

Continue to learn what the scriptures say. The Bible is life-giving, not poisoning, and helps us discern truth versus poison lies.

We live in a world where poison is more readily available than ever before. Do not accept negative mind poisoning information. Stay with God and His word and His people. It will be health to your mind.

PRAYER:

Help me discern truth from mind poisoning lies, Lord. I only want what heals and strengthens my mind.
